Tory E. Griffin, Partner
Tory E Griffin has extensive experience representing clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small to mid-size companies, public entities, and individuals in all aspects of civil litigation in state and federal courts, both at the trial and appellate levels, as well as in administrative proceedings.
After spending a year clerking for a federal judge in Sacramento, Tory spent the first 6 years of private practice as an associate and the next 11 years as a partner at Downey Brand, Sacramento’s largest law firm. In 2014, he formed his own firm, Jeppson & Griffin, in his hometown of Roseville, CA. Creeping further up into the foothills and reuniting with some of his former colleagues, Tory joined RTW as a partner in January 2022.
Although Tory has not been at the “big” firm since 2014, Tory continues to handle significant litigation matters and his clients continue to trust him with their most valued property and business interests. Over the past several years, Tory has represented commercial and residential property developers, product and vaccine manufacturers, intellectual property developers and retailers, financial institutions, business owners, landowners, federal contractors, professionals, and last but not least, individuals.
Tory’s litigation practice continues to focus on complex commercial and business litigation, real estate litigation, intellectual property litigation, and employment litigation. Tory has also handled numerous disputes relating to family-owned businesses in the context of divorce proceedings.
Tory believes that litigation is an art, and a good litigator can effectively litigate most any dispute. Tory also understands that litigation is expensive and believes a negotiated resolution may often be the best solution for a client. Nonetheless, he remains ready and willing to take a case to trial when necessary or appropriate. Over the past several years, he has successfully tried numerous cases to verdict or decision, many with tens of millions of dollars in dispute.
Tory’s clients have also trusted him to act as lead counsel in dozens of writs and appeals before appellate courts throughout California. He has argued complex matters before the California Supreme Court, California Court of Appeals, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Utah Supreme Court.
In the administrative litigation arena, Tory has represented major gaming companies, leading telecommunications providers, hospitals, software manufacturers, government contractors, and other entities in bid protest and other administrative proceedings. He has also represented numerous individuals in professional license disciplinary hearings before several California agencies.
Finally, Tory routinely advises clients on business and employment issues, and how to avoid litigation.
In 2004, he served as the President of the Federal Bar Association, Sacramento chapter. After graduating first in his class at the University of Oregon School of
Law (Go Ducks!), Tory started his career as a law clerk to the Honorable William B. Shubb, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of California.
